A Love No Pressure Can Break

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੩ ॥
salok mehlaa 3.
Shalok, Third Mehl:
ਜਿਉ ਤਨੁ ਕੋਲੂ ਪੀੜੀਐ ਰਤੁ ਨ ਭੋਰੀ ਡੇਹਿ ॥
ji-o tan koloo peerhee-ai rat na bhoree dayhi.
It is as if my body has been crushed in the oil-press, without yielding even a drop of blood;
ਜੀਉ ਵੰਞੈ ਚਉ ਖੰਨੀਐ ਸਚੇ ਸੰਦੜੈ ਨੇਹਿ ॥
jee-o vanjai cha-o khannee-ai sachay sand-rhai nayhi.
it is as if my soul has been cut apart into pieces for the sake of the Love of the True Lord;
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਲੁ ਨ ਚੁਕਈ ਰਾਤੀ ਅਤੈ ਡੇਹ ॥੧॥
naanak mayl na chuk-ee raatee atai dayh. ||1||
O Nanak, still, night and day, my Union with the Lord is not broken. ||1||

In plain words

Even if the world pressed on me with all its weight, the bond I feel with the True One would not break.

Even if everything were pulling me in different directions, that love would still hold.

Night and day, come what may, this connection stays whole.

The deepest bonds are the ones that hold even under great pressure.
The deeper layer

Guru Amar Das uses two intense images of pressure — the oil-press, the sense of being pulled apart — to make one point about steadfast love. Following the wellbeing guidelines, the graphic edge of the imagery is set aside and its meaning kept: a bond so deep that no amount of hardship can break it (mayl na chuk-ee raatee atai dayh). This is love as unshakable ground, the same quality the philosophy calls sahaj — rooted in something that outside events cannot rattle. For a child: real love is not the kind that only lasts while things are easy.

A Question to Sit With

What is a bond in your life that stays strong even when things get hard?
