Those Who Serve Come to Rest

ਮਃ ੩ ॥
mehlaa 3.
Third Mehl:
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਸਚੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
naanak satgur sayveh aapnaa say jan sachay parvaan.
O Nanak, those humble beings are true and approved, who serve their True Guru.
ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਇ ਸਮਾਇ ਰਹੇ ਚੂਕਾ ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੨॥
har kai naa-ay samaa-ay rahay chookaa aavan jaan. ||2||
They remain absorbed in the Name of the Lord, and their comings and goings cease. ||2||

In plain words

Nanak says: the people who serve their True Guru are true through and through — there is nothing fake in them.

They stay soaked in the Name like a cloth soaked in color, and their long, tiring back-and-forth finally comes to rest.

Living from what is real lets the restless part of you finally come to rest.
The deeper layer

Those who serve the True Guru come to rest in the Naam.

A short shalok promising rest. Say jan sachay parvaan — those who serve the True Guru are sachay, true (the sach of Gurbani: made of what lasts). The gift is chookaa aavan jaan — the coming and going ends: the long, tiring back-and-forth comes to rest in peace. “Absorbed in the Name” is given the dyer's image — cloth soaked through with color — a recurring Gurbani figure for being wholly steeped in the divine.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that makes your restless, running-around mind finally settle down?
