Dying While Alive, I Found the Wealth

ਜੋ ਜੀਵਨ ਮਰਨਾ ਜਾਨੈ ॥ ਸੋ ਪੰਚ ਸੈਲ ਸੁਖ ਮਾਨੈ ॥
jo jeevan marnaa jaanai. so panch sail sukh maanai.
Those select few, who know how to die while yet alive, enjoy great peace.
ਕਬੀਰੈ ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
kabeerai so Dhan paa-i-aa.
Kabir has found that wealth;
ਹਰਿ ਭੇਟਤ ਆਪੁ ਮਿਟਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੬॥
har bhaytat aap mitaa-i-aa. ||4||6||
meeting with the Lord, he has erased his self-conceit. ||4||6||

In plain words

Those rare few who learn how to let the small self go while they are fully alive discover a deep, steady peace.

Kabir says: I have found that true wealth. In meeting the One, my proud, separate 'me' quietly melted away, and what a relief that was.

Letting the ego melt while fully alive is the wealth that brings deep peace.
The deeper layer

jo jeevan marnaa jaanai (who knows how to die while living) panch sail sukh maanai (enjoys great peace). har bhaytat aap mitaa-i-aa (meeting the One, the self-conceit erased). This closes the ulat-baasee: the greatest paradox, dying-while-alive, yields the greatest wealth, freedom from the ego.

A Question to Sit With

Why might loosening the grip of 'me first' actually feel like relief rather than loss?
