The Heart-Cup Emptied and Set Upright

ਕੁੰਭ ਕਮਲੁ ਜਲਿ ਭਰਿਆ ॥
kumbh kamal jal bhari-aa.
The pitcher of my heart-lotus is filled with water;
ਜਲੁ ਮੇਟਿਆ ਊਭਾ ਕਰਿਆ ॥
jal mayti-aa oobhaa kari-aa.
I have spilled out the water, and set it upright.
ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਜਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥
kaho kabeer jan jaani-aa.
Says Kabir, the Lord's humble servant, this I know.
ਜਉ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਤਉ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੨॥੧੦॥
ja-o jaani-aa ta-o man maani-aa. ||2||10||
Now that I know this, my mind is pleased and appeased. ||2||10||

In plain words

Picture the cup of your heart lying tilted, filled up with ordinary, restless water.

I gently poured that water out and set the cup upright again, open to the sky. Kabir says: now I truly understand, and understanding it, my mind has come home and is completely at peace.

Empty the heart-cup of restless craving and set it upright, open, and the mind comes home.
The deeper layer

Kabir says his heart was like a cup full of restless water, and he poured it out.

Kumbh kamal jal bhari-aa: the pitcher of the heart-lotus was filled with water. The water is craving, the busy wanting that fills us up. Jal mayti-aa: he spilled it out. Oobhaa kari-aa: he set the cup upright.

Picture a cup lying on its side in the rain. It can never catch a drop. Stand it up, empty, and it can be filled. A heart packed with wanting has no room left. An emptied, upright heart is open and ready.

Ja-o jaani-aa ta-o man maani-aa: once I knew this, my mind was content. The mind agrees with what the heart has learned. This is mannai, trusting and following the One from the inside, so that what you know and how you feel line up at last.

A Question to Sit With

What might you gently pour out of your own heart to leave more room for peace?
