Even Your Devotion Is a Gift From the One's Treasure-House

ਆਪੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਹੈ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਦਾਣੁ ॥
aapay bhagat bhandaar hai pi-aaraa aapay dayvai daan.
The Beloved Himself is the treasure of devotion; He Himself gives His gifts.
ਆਪੇ ਸੇਵ ਕਰਾਇਦਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਆਪਿ ਦਿਵਾਵੈ ਮਾਣੁ ॥
aapay sayv karaa-idaa pi-aaraa aap divaavai maan.
The Beloved Himself commits some to His service, and He Himself blesses them with honor.
ਆਪੇ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਇਦਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਆਪੇ ਗੁਣੀ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥੩॥
aapay taarhee laa-idaa pi-aaraa aapay gunee niDhaan. ||3||
The Beloved Himself is absorbed in Samaadhi; He Himself is the treasure of excellence. ||3||

In plain words

The Beloved is the very treasure-house of devotion, handing out its gifts freely.

It draws some into loving service and crowns them with honor.

It sits in the deepest stillness, the storehouse of everything good.

Even your devotion is a gift handed to you from the treasure-house of the One.
The deeper layer

Even your love for the One is a gift the One gave you.

Bhagat bhandaar means the treasure-house of devotion. Devotion is loving attention to the One. We often think we have to build that love by ourselves. This line says something freeing. The love itself comes out of the One's own treasure-house, handed out as a gift.

Think of a child who draws a birthday card for a parent, using crayons and paper the parent bought. The love is real. And the crayons came from the one being loved.

The One also sits in taarhee, deep, still absorption, like a quiet lake with no ripples. And the One is gunee nidhaan, the storehouse of every good quality. Every kindness and every bit of goodness is drawn from there.

A Question to Sit With

What good quality in you feels less like something you made and more like a gift?
