In plain words

Praise the Teacher and the One at the heart of the universe — hold them in mind, body, and heart.

Let the True One live in your thoughts; there is no finer way to live than this.

A life with no room for the Name grows hollow and cold.

I am grateful, with all my heart, for the company of good people who lean on the One Oneness together.

Keeping the One in mind, body, and heart is the finest way there is to live.
The deeper layer

Keep the One in your mind, your body and your heart, all of you at once.

Guru Arjan keeps saying bhaa-ee. It means brother, sister, dear friend. It makes the whole shabad sound like a warm talk among family at the table.

The teaching is simple. Man tan hirdai dhaar — hold the One in your mind, body and heart. Ayhaa karnee saar — this is the best way to live.

Then comes a strong picture. Jit tan naam na oopjai — a body where the Name never rises turns to ash. Think of a campfire after everyone has gone to bed. Only grey ash is left, with no warmth and no light. The loss is of aliveness.

Guru Arjan ends with thanks for the saadhsangat, the company of good people. They lean together on aykankaar, the One and only. That is where this warmth grows.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people who help you become your best self?
