In plain words

One is our Father, and we are all children of that One — You are our whole guiding light.

Listen, friends: my heart would give itself gladly, again and again — only let me see You.

One is our Father, so every single person is truly your brother and sister.
The deeper layer

This one says we all have one Father, so every person is your brother or sister.

Ayk pitaa aykas kay ham baarik — there is one Father, and we are all children of that One. The line says plainly that people belong together. No caste (the old ranking of people by birth), no rank and no religion can split children of the same parent. Think of a big family dinner. Cousins from everywhere sit at one table, because they share the same grandparents.

Guru Arjan speaks to us as meetaa, "friends." That makes the whole shabad feel like a warm talk. What does he long for? Darsan, a glimpse of the One. Darsan means seeing, being in the One's presence.

A Question to Sit With

If everyone really is part of one family, how might you treat a stranger differently?
