Sikhism·Raag Sorath·Shabad 58
Verse 1 of 4

The Strength You Run On Was Given

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
sorath mehlaa 5.
Sorat'h, Fifth Mehl:
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨੁ ਅੰਧਿਆਰੈ ਦੇਵਨਹਾਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
maa-i-aa moh magan anDhi-aarai dayvanhaar na jaanai.
Infatuated with the darkness of emotional attachment to Maya, he does not know the Lord, the Great Giver.
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਾਜਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਰਚਿਆ ਬਲੁ ਅਪੁਨੋ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨੈ ॥੧॥
jee-o pind saaj jin rachi-aa bal apuno kar maanai. ||1||
The Lord created his body and fashioned his soul, but he claims that his power is his own. ||1||

In plain words

Caught up in the fog of chasing shiny things, a person can forget the Giver who gave it all.

The One shaped the body and set the soul spinning with life — yet we sometimes act as if the power were all our own.

The strength you run on was given — it is good to remember that.
The deeper layer

This one says the strength you run on was given to you. Maa-i-aa moh magan anDhi-aarai — lost in the darkness of love for Maya. Maya is the shiny, passing world: things, stuff, fame. The darkness here is simply forgetting. Wrapped up in Maya, we lose sight of the Giver behind the gifts.

Then the verse gently points out a mistake: bal apuno kar maanai. We think our strength is our own. But the One shaped our body and gave us life. It is like a phone that thinks it makes its own power. It forgets the charger it was plugged into all night.

This is not a crime. It is a forgetting. The whole shabad helps us remember the Source of the strength we run on.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you can do well that you did not give yourself?
