Real Change Begins With Unflinching Honesty

Night and day, I wandered around in greed, contemplating evil schemes.

In plain words

Day and night I wandered in greed, turning over schemes in my head.

I never really did much good — that, honestly, is the state I'm in.

Real change begins with clean, unflinching honesty about yourself — not to despair, but so the turning can start.
The deeper layer

Here Nanak looks honestly at himself. He speaks as "I," not about someone else.

Sab roj gastam dar havaa — day and night I wandered in greed. Gaahay na naykee kaar kardam — I never did good deeds. This is not someone hating himself. It is the calm, clear honesty that every real change starts with.

Think of a coach watching a video of her team's game. She doesn't yell. She doesn't pretend it went fine either. She says, "Here's what we got wrong," so the team can get better.

A great teacher takes the lowest seat and says it for all of us. That way we learn to look at ourselves without making excuses. And without giving up.

A Question to Sit With

Can you look honestly at something you're not proud of, without either excusing it or beating yourself up?
