For the Anchored Life, Even Death Becomes a Friend

Azraa-eel, the Messenger of Death, is the friend of the human being who has Your support, Lord.

His sins are all forgiven; Your humble servant gazes upon Your Vision. ||3||

In plain words

For the person who has Your support, even death itself becomes a friend.

Their wrongs are all forgiven, and Your servant gazes on the sight of You.

For a life anchored in the deathless One, even death becomes a friend — not the enemy that ends everything, but the one who opens the door home.
The deeper layer

This is the shabad's landmark, and one of the most beautiful lines in the raag: for the one who has the One's support, "Azraa-eel, the Messenger of Death, is the friend." The great terror is transformed into a companion. For a life anchored in the deathless One, dying is not an enemy that ends everything but a friend who opens the door home. This is the raag's Persian-Islamic imagery turned to its most consoling use: the angel of death, feared by all, becomes a friend to the one who loves the One.

A Question to Sit With

What would it change in you to relate to your deepest fear as, one day, possibly a friend?
