Verse 12 of 22

Freedom Makes Even the Lowest Place a Delight

ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਦੇ ਤਿਨ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
jo gurmukh naam Dhi-aa-iday tin darsan deejai.
Please bless me with the Blessed Vision of the Darshan of those Gurmukhs, who meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਹਮ ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਪਖਾਲਦੇ ਧੂੜਿ ਘੋਲਿ ਘੋਲਿ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੧੨॥
ham tin kay charan pakhaalday Dhoorh ghol ghol peejai. ||12||
I wash their feet, and drink in the dust of their feet, dissolved in the wash water. ||12||

In plain words

Let me see those teaching-faced ones who hold the Name in mind.

I wash their feet and drink the very water, dissolved in the dust of their feet.

The freedom of a self that no longer needs to be above anyone can make even the lowest place a delight.
The deeper layer

The verse expresses the extreme of humble love — washing the feet of the devoted and honoring even the wash-water. Read gently, this is not degradation but the joy of one who wants nothing for the ego and everything for love — to be as low as the dust beneath good people is, for Ram Das, a delight, not a humiliation. Humility here is happiness: the freedom of a self that has stopped needing to be above anyone.

A Question to Sit With

Where might letting go of needing to be 'above' others actually feel like freedom?
