What Grace Gives, You Didn't Earn

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਤੁਸਿ ਕਰੇ ਪਸਾਓ ॥
satgur daataa aakhee-ai tus karay pasaa-o.
The True Guru is called the Giver; in His Mercy, He grants His Grace.
ਹਉ ਗੁਰ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਸਦ ਵਾਰਿਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਦਿਤੜਾ ਨਾਓ ॥੧੬॥
ha-o gur vitahu sad vaari-aa jin dit-rhaa naa-o. ||16||
I am forever a sacrifice to the Guru, who has blessed me with the Lord's Name. ||16||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The true teaching is called the Giver; in mercy, it grants grace.

Forever a sacrifice to the teaching that blessed me with the Name.

What you're given by grace, you didn't earn — and endless gratitude is the natural response to that.
The deeper layer

The teaching is "the Giver" — it does not sell or lend the Name but gives it, "in His Mercy." Everything Ram Das has received was grace, freely handed over. His endless gratitude is the natural response of one who knows they did not earn what they were given. The Giver gives; the receiver can only be thankful.

A Question to Sit With

What good in your life was simply given, not earned? How does remembering that shape your gratitude?
