The Greatest Kindness Is Showing the Way to the Real

ਗੁਰਿ ਪਿਆਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਧੰਨੋ ॥
gur pi-aarai har sayvi-aa gur Dhan gur Dhanno.
My Beloved Guru serves the Lord. Blessed is the Guru, Blessed is the Guru.
ਗੁਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਦਸਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਵਡ ਪੁੰਨੋ ॥੯॥
gur har maarag dasi-aa gur punn vad punno. ||9||
The Guru has shown me the Lord's Path; the Guru has done the greatest good deed. ||9||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My beloved teaching serves the One — blessed, blessed is the teaching.

It showed me the way to the One; it did the greatest good of all.

The greatest kindness one person can do another is to show them the way to what is real and good.
The deeper layer

The verse's superlative — "the Guru has done the greatest good deed" — names the single most valuable gift anyone can give another: showing them the way to the One. Of all kindnesses, this is the greatest, because it opens what nothing else can. Ram Das's blessing ("Blessed, blessed is the Guru") is the gratitude of one who received exactly this — the pointing of the way.

A Question to Sit With

Who showed you 'the way' to something that mattered most? What was that worth to you?
