At Its Best, a Community Has No Hierarchy of Worth

ਜੋ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਦੇ ਸੇ ਪੁੰਨ ਪਰਾਣੀ ॥
jo gursikh gur sayvday say punn paraanee.
Those Sikhs of the Guru, who serve the Guru, are the most blessed beings.
ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਵਾਰਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੀ ॥੧੦॥
jan naanak tin ka-o vaari-aa sadaa sadaa kurbaanee. ||10||
Servant Nanak is a sacrifice to them; He is forever and ever a sacrifice. ||10||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The students who serve the teaching are the most blessed of all.

Nanak is a sacrifice to them, forever and ever.

A community at its best has no hierarchy of worth — each one bows to the others, all blessed by serving the One.
The deeper layer

This one honors every student on the path.

A Sikh is a student, a learner. Jo gursikh gur sayvday say punn paraanee — the Guru's Sikhs who serve the Guru are the most blessed people. Guru Ram Das, the fourth Guru, keeps placing himself below ordinary devoted people. Jan naanak tin ka-o vaari-aa — servant Nanak gives himself to them. Every Guru who wrote in the Guru Granth Sahib signed with the name Nanak.

He honors not only the teacher but every fellow learner. Think of a team where the captain cheers loudest for the newest player.

That is a community with no ladder of who matters more. All who serve the One are blessed, and each bows to the others.

A Question to Sit With

What would change in your circles if everyone quietly honored everyone else this way?
