Verse 2 of 3

The Invitation Is Free; Greed Keeps Crowding It Out

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਕਾਹਿ ਨ ਗਾਵਹੀ ਮੂਰਖ ਅਗਿਆਨਾ ॥
har gun kaahi na gaavhee moorakh agi-aanaa.
Why do you not sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, you ignorant fool?
ਝੂਠੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਾਗਿ ਕੈ ਨਹਿ ਮਰਨੁ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
jhoothai laalach laag kai neh maran pachhaanaa. ||1||
You are attached to false greed, and you do not even consider death. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Why don't you sing the One's praises, my friend?

You're caught in false greed, and you won't even give death a thought.

The invitation is simple and free — sing, turn toward what matters — and it's mostly greed that keeps crowding it out.
The deeper layer

The verse names the strange denial at the heart of a distracted life: "you do not even consider death," caught instead in "false greed." "Ignorant fool" is rendered gently as "my friend" — the Ninth Master's tone is a friend's frankness, not contempt. The question "why don't you sing?" is really an invitation: the singing is right there, free, and it is what greed keeps crowding out.

A Question to Sit With

What free, good thing does 'busy greed' keep crowding out of your days?
