One Breath of Attention Beats Reading Whole Libraries

ਤਿਲੰਗ ਬਾਣੀ ਭਗਤਾ ਕੀ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀ
tilang banee bhagtaa kee kabeer jee
Tilang, The Word Of Devotee Kabir Jee:
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਬੇਦ ਕਤੇਬ ਇਫਤਰਾ ਭਾਈ ਦਿਲ ਕਾ ਫਿਕਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
bayd katayb iftaraa bhaa-ee dil kaa fikar na jaa-ay.
The Vedas and the Scriptures are only make-believe, O Siblings of Destiny; they do not relieve the anxiety of the heart.
ਟੁਕੁ ਦਮੁ ਕਰਾਰੀ ਜਉ ਕਰਹੁ ਹਾਜਿਰ ਹਜੂਰਿ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥੧॥
tuk dam karaaree ja-o karahu haajir hajoor khudaa-ay. ||1||
If you will only center yourself on the Lord, even for just a breath, then you shall see the Lord face-to-face, present before you. ||1||

In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

Just reading the scriptures, by itself, is make-believe, friends — it doesn't quiet the ache in the heart.

But steady your heart on the One even for a single breath, and you'll see the One right there, face to face, present before you.

Reading about the good can't quiet the heart's ache the way one breath of true attention on it can — the One is nearer than a library.
The deeper layer

Kabir opens with a sharp but precise critique: "the Vedas and the Scriptures are only make-believe" — not that scripture is worthless, but that reading about the One, as a substitute for meeting the One, "does not relieve the anxiety of the heart." Information cannot heal the ache that only direct experience heals. And the alternative is astonishingly near: center the heart "even for just a breath," and you "see the Lord face-to-face." The One is not at the end of a library but one breath of true attention away.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever known a lot about something yet still felt the ache of not having actually met it?
