What can the silly young bride do if she doesn't please her Beloved?
She can plead and beg over and over, and still not reach His presence. Without a stroke of grace nothing comes, however frantically she runs about. Drunk on greed and pride and ego, tangled in the glitter — she cannot reach Him that way. How foolish the young bride is!
The verse is honest about a hard truth: frantic effort alone doesn't work. The bride "may plead and implore so many times," "run around frantically," and still not arrive — because she is still "intoxicated with greed, pride and egotism." The problem is not that she tries too little but that the self doing the trying is still full of the very things that separate her. Effort driven by ego cannot reach what only the surrender of ego can. This sets up the answer of the next verse.
Where are you 'running frantically' at something that might need surrender more than effort?
