The Name of the Lord is the medicine; it is like an axe, which destroys the diseases caused by anger and egotism. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Hold the One close in your mind, the way you'd hold something precious.

Its Name works like medicine — even like an axe that chops through the sicknesses of anger and pride.

Turning toward the One is medicine — sometimes gentle, sometimes an axe that cuts old anger and pride at the root.
The deeper layer

Todee is a healing raag, and this shabad makes the metaphor explicit: the Name is aukhad, medicine. But then a second, tougher image: it is "like an axe, which destroys the diseases caused by anger and egotism." Some inner tangles are soft and dissolve gently; others — the deep roots of krodh (anger) and ahankaar (ego) — need a decisive cut. Guru Arjan isn't afraid to say that turning toward the One can be forceful medicine, clearing what has grown thick and stubborn inside us.

A Question to Sit With

Is there an angry or proud habit in you that would take a real, clean cut to change? What might that look like?
