The Highest Thing Turns Out to Live in Good Company

ਖੋਜਤ ਖੋਜਤ ਬਹੁ ਪਰਕਾਰੇ ਸਰਬ ਅਰਥ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
khojat khojat baho parkaaray sarab arath beechaaray.
Searching, searching in so many ways, I have contemplated all the objects of life.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਾਇਆ ਰਚਿ ਬੰਧਿ ਹਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
saaDhsang param gat paa-ee-ai maa-i-aa rach banDh haaray. ||1||
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the supreme state is attained. But those who are engrossed in the bondage of Maya, lose the game of life. ||1||

In plain words

I looked and looked, turning over everything life has to offer.

In good company the highest thing opens up — but those tangled only in the glitter miss the whole point of the game.

After examining everything life offers, the highest thing turns out to live in good company.
The deeper layer

This one is an honest report from a seeker. After looking at everything, the highest thing turns out to live in good company.

Khojat khojat baho parkaaray — searching and searching in so many ways. Sarab arath beechaaray — I've thought about everything life offers. This isn't someone turning down a world they never tasted. It's someone who looked at it all and found where the best thing actually lives.

Saadhsang param gat paa-ee-ai — in good company the highest state is reached. Param gat means the highest place a soul can reach.

Then comes a clear but kind contrast. Maa-i-aa rach banDh haaray — those tied up in maya, the world's glitter, lose the game. They aren't condemned. They just miss what they were playing for. Think of a kid who spends the whole match collecting stickers from the stands and never watches the game.

A Question to Sit With

If you tried everything the world offered, what do you think you'd finally find most worth keeping?
