Falling Is Human; Grace Reaches Down to Lift You

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿ ਮੋਹ ਕੂਪਿ ਪਰਿਆ ॥
kaam kroDh moh koop pari-aa.
You have fallen into the pit of sexual desire, anger and emotional attachment.
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੋ ਤਰਿਆ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੬॥
gur parsaad naanak ko tari-aa. ||4||1||16||
By Guru's Grace, O Nanak, a rare few are saved. ||4||1||16||

In plain words

It's easy to slip into the pit of wanting, anger, and clinging too tightly.

And here and there someone climbs back out — lifted, by grace, more than by their own strength.

Falling into wanting and anger is easy and human — and grace is what reaches down to lift you out.
The deeper layer

The shabad ends honestly on two truths held together. First, the "pit" (garho) of kaam, krodh, moh (desire, anger, attachment) is easy to fall into — this is the ordinary human condition, not a special failing. Second, the way out is "by Guru's Grace" and "a rare few" — which keeps us humble: escape is real but not a solo achievement to boast about. This is not discouragement; naming the pit accurately is the first step to being lifted from it, and grace is exactly what reaches down.

A Question to Sit With

Why might it help to admit that everyone falls into these 'pits,' rather than pretending you never do?
