In Chet, lovely spring has come, and the bumble bees hum with joy.
The forest blossoms right in front of my door. If only my Beloved would come home!
If the Beloved does not come home, how can my heart find peace? Missing You wears my body down.
The songbird sings sweetly in the mango tree, but how can I bear this ache deep inside?
The bee buzzes around the flowering branches, but how can I go on? Oh mother, this missing is too much for me.
Nanak says: in Chet, peace comes easily when the heart finds the Beloved inside the home of its own heart.
Chet (roughly March-April) opens the year of months with spring, and nature's beauty sharpens the ache of missing the Beloved. "My body is wasting away... I am dying, O mother" is the voice of viraha (separation-longing) in classical Indian poetry: the ache of missing someone with your whole self. Peace comes when the Beloved is found within the home of the heart (ghar dhan).
When something is beautiful, who do you most want to share it with?
