The important men of the city met together, and sought the Protection of the Guru, the True Guru.
The Guru, the True Guru, the Guru is the Lord of the Universe. Go ahead and consult the Simritees - they will confirm this.
The Simritees and the Shaastras all confirm that Suk Dayv and Prahlaad meditated on the Guru, the Lord of the Universe, and knew Him as the Supreme Lord.
The five thieves and the highway robbers dwell in the fortress of the body-village; the Guru has destroyed their home and place.
The Puraanas continually praise the giving of charity, but devotional worship of the Lord is only obtained through the Word of Guru Nanak.

# Raag Tukhaari, Shabad 10 — The Robbers of the Heart-Village Undone
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The leading people of the city came together and took shelter with the Guru.
They said the Guru is the very One who holds the whole world, and the old holy books agree.
Those books tell of great souls long ago who kept the One in mind and knew the Guru as the Highest.
Inside the little village of the body live five sneaky thieves, and here their hideout is torn down for good.
Songs of praise, sacred readings, and kind giving go on every day, but true love for the One comes alive through the Guru's Word.
The leading people of the city gathered and took shelter with the Guru.
The city's elders take the Guru's ot, his shelter. The stanza honors the older scriptures with interfaith evenhandedness: the Simritis and Shaastras are cited as agreeing, and beloved figures of devotion, Suk Dev, Prahlaad, and Sri Ram, are named as those who kept the One in mind. The panch chor (five thieves) in the "body-village" are the inner troublemakers, lust, anger, greed, attachment, and pride, whose hideout is torn down. The close gives the whole point: rituals and charity are good, but living love for the One "comes alive through the Word" (gur bachan). This closes the tenth composition of the raag (||6||4||10||).
Which "sneaky thief", anger, wanting-more, or showing-off, do you most want to move out of your inner village?
