Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Listen, my Beloved — I have just one prayer.
You live in the quiet room deep inside me, while I have been rolling around out here like a speck of dust in the wind.
On my own, I feel small and empty-handed. But there is a sweet nectar I can taste: the Name, the One kept in mind — and the teaching lets me drink it in.
Nothing else stays with me for the long journey. So let me gather this one true treasure and come home. Your teaching is real, and it is true.
This one is a quiet prayer: You live inside me, so help me come home.
Sun naah pi-aaray ik baynantee mayree — listen, dear Beloved, to my one prayer. Too nij ghar vasi-arhaa — You live in Your own home, deep inside. Nij ghar means "one's own home." Here it is the quiet room inside us where the One already lives.
Meanwhile the soul rolls around outside like a ball of dust. That is not a put-down. It is an honest way of saying, "On my own, my hands are empty."
Then comes the sweet part. Amrit naam is the Name that tastes like nectar. Through the Guru's word, we can taste it.
Everything else we pick up along the way stays behind. The Name is the one treasure that lasts the whole journey. It is like a long school trip. The snacks run out and the souvenirs get lost. The friend holding your hand stays with you all the way home.
If you could ask for just one thing that would truly last, what would it be?
