Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
You have been invited home — into the presence of the One. Do not keep it waiting!
Live soaked in that love, day and night, and you meet the One easily and gently. Just let go of anger and the puffed-up self, and the meeting happens on its own.
Those who go their own way just come and go.
When you truly dance with joy, you do not hide behind a veil, and you set down the things you were clutching. You come as you really are.
So come to know your own true self. That is the heart of everything.
This one says you have already been invited, so come now.
Mahal bulaa-irhee-ay bilam na keejai — you have been called into the One's home, so do not wait. The invitation is already in your hands.
What does it take to go? Just set down two heavy bags: anger, and the puffed-up self that wants to look big. Those who follow only their own wishes keep coming and going, never arriving.
Then comes a lively picture. Jab naachee tab ghooghat kaisaa — once you are dancing, why keep a veil over your face? Think of a friend who says, "I'll dance at the party," and then hides by the wall. Once you are on the floor, dance for real. You come as you really are, with nothing to hide.
The verse also says to break the water pot you were carrying. Set down what you were clutching, and walk in free.
Last, naanak aapai aap pachhaanai — know your own true self. A gurmukh, someone who turns toward the Guru, thinks about what really matters. That is the heart of everything.
What would it feel like to come somewhere “just as you really are,” with nothing to hide?
