Raag Wadahans
Commentary

Raag Wadahans, Shabad, Mehl 3 (Guru Amar Das)

Real cleanliness is inward: washing the body doesn't clean a muddy heart, and even great skill can't remove the ego — the mind settles not by force but in the safe Sanctuary of wisdom, where it comes freshly alive.

The Arc

Pauri 0 relocates purity to the inside — "when the mind is filthy, everything is filthy; washing the body does not clean the mind." The rahao (Pauri 1) gives the positive gift: remembrance is a treasure. Pauri 2 warns that even the Siddhas' yogic mastery can't scrub the ego. Pauri 3 gives the true remedy — the mind settles not by discipline but in the Sanctuary of the Guru, transformed "beyond description." Pauri 4 closes on jeevat marnaa: the grasping self goes quiet and the heart is "rejuvenated," pure and light.

Key Vocabulary

  • Man mailai sabh kichh mailaa (P0) — "when the mind is filthy, all is filthy"; purity is inward.
  • Siddhas' yogic postures (P2) — impressive technique that alone cannot remove ego.
  • Sanctuary of the True Guru (P3) — refuge, not force, as the way the mind settles.
  • Jeevat marnaa (P4) — "die while alive"; the ego quieted, the heart rejuvenated.

Themes and Cross-Connections

"Washing the body doesn't clean the mind" restates the tradition's steady relocation of ritual purity to the heart (Japji, Aasaa's inner-pilgrimage shabads, Bihaagraa's inner "bath," B00C1149). "Technique alone can't transform" echoes Bihaagraa B00C1150 (jap-tap-sanjam couldn't cool the fire without shelter). Jeevat marnaa runs across the GGS (Bihaagraa ki Vaar P10/47).

For Raag Wadahans

A clear, everyday teaching for a child: you can scrub your hands and face all you like, but real cleanliness is on the inside — a kind, honest heart. And you can be brilliant at hard, impressive things and still have inner work to do. The restless mind doesn't get calm by fighting it; it settles when you bring it somewhere safe and wise — and there it comes freshly, cleanly alive.
