Raag Wadahans
Commentary

Raag Wadahans, Shabad, Mehl 3 (Guru Amar Das)

The landmark teaching, stated with total clarity: "the treasure is within you — do not search for it on the outside." Rest easy inside, master your own mind, and wake up.

The Arc

Pauri 0: keep the True One in mind and rest in "the home of your own self"; duality and doubt are what tire a heart. Pauri 1 is the landmark, its refrain-bookends: "the treasure is within you; do not search for it outside." Pauri 2: the precious gift of human life, and the inner riches of a heart that drops ego. Pauri 3 closes: the fortunate master their own minds — real freedom — and anyone can wake up.

Key Vocabulary

  • "The treasure is within you; do not search outside" (P1) — the inward turn, stated with total clarity.
  • Home of the self (P0) — resting easy inside.
  • Conquering the mind (P3) — self-mastery as true freedom and renunciation.
  • Precious human birth (P2) — life as a rare gift.

Translation Notes

  • Death-imagery ("Messenger of Death," "noose") is rendered as fear losing its grip / restless circling ending, per the wellbeing rules.
  • P3's "lovers of beautiful young women" is rendered gender-neutrally as attachment to fleeting pleasures.

Themes and Cross-Connections

"The treasure is within" is one of Gurbani's central teachings — Gauree's "all treasures within," Aasaa's "man tu jot saroop" (B00C940), Bihaagraa's inward turn (B00C1145), Wadahans's own "near not far" (B00C1173) and Kabir's Diamond (B00C1000/1175). "Self-mastery as freedom" restates Bihaagraa B00C1141 ("be the boss of your big feelings") and Anand Sahib.

For Raag Wadahans

This shabad carries one of the most freeing teachings a child can ever hear, and it says it twice, plainly: the best treasure isn't somewhere out there to be found and won — it's already inside you the whole time. We spend so much energy searching the world for what we already carry. Rest easy inside your own heart, learn to be the gentle boss of your own mind, and know that even a sleepy heart can always wake up.
