Even the Good You Know Was Given as a Gift

Wadahans, Fifth Mehl:
ਤੂ ਜਾਣਾਇਹਿ ਤਾ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
too jaanaa-ihi taa ko-ee jaanai.
When You allow Yourself to be known, then we know You.
ਤੇਰਾ ਦੀਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥੧॥
tayraa dee-aa naam vakhaanai. ||1||
We chant Your Name, which You have given to us. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

We only really know You when You let Yourself be known —

and then we say the Name that You Yourself placed in us.

Even the good things you know and remember were, in a way, given to you as gifts.
The deeper layer

"When You allow Yourself to be known, then we know You; we chant Your Name, which You have given us." Even our knowing and our remembering are gifts from the One — a deep humility. We don't seize the One; the One reveals itself, and even the Name on our lips was placed there.

A Question to Sit With

What's something good you know that someone first had to give or teach you?
