Set Down the Puffed-Up Feeling and Find a Home Inside

ha-umai maar mu-ee-ay too chal gur kai bhaa-ay.
Overcome your egotism, O mortal bride, and walk in the Guru's Way.
Thus you shall ever enjoy your Husband Lord, O mortal bride, and obtain an abode in the home of your own inner being.
nij ghar vaasaa paa-ay sabad vajaa-ay sadaa suhaagan naaree.
Obtaining an abode in the home of her inner being, she vibrates the Word of the Shabad, and is a happy soul-bride forever.
pir ralee-aalaa joban baalaa an-din kant savaaree.
The Husband Lord is delightful, and forever young; night and day, He embellishes His bride.
Her Husband Lord activates the destiny written on her forehead, and she is adorned with the True Shabad.

O Nanak, the soul-bride is imbued with the Love of the Lord, when she walks according to the Will of the True Guru. ||4||1||

In plain words

Set down the puffed-up feeling and walk the wise way — that's how closeness lasts.

You find a home right inside your own heart, and a quiet song of gladness begins.

A heart adorned with truth is loved, and rests in a steady, graceful peace.

When you set down the puffed-up feeling and follow what's wise, you find a home right inside your own heart.
The deeper layer

The Chhant closes with the instruction and its fruit: "overcome your egotism, and walk in the Guru's Way... obtain an abode in the home of your own inner being." Dropping ego and following wisdom leads home — to "the home of the inner self" (ghar), where a quiet gladness (sahaj, poised peace) begins. "The Beloved is delightful and forever young" — the joyful register again. The colophon (||4||1||) closes the Chhant. For a child: when you set down the puffed-up feeling and follow what's wise, you find a home right inside your own heart.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to be truly 'at home' inside yourself?
