A Steady Heart Stays Through Good Days and Hard

vad-hans mehlaa 4.
Wadahans, Fourth Mehl:
har kirpaa har kirpaa kar satgur mayl sukh-daata raam.
O Lord, show Your Mercy, show Your Mercy, and let me meet the True Guru, the Giver of peace.
ham poochhah ham poochhah satgur paas har baataa raam.
I go and ask, I go and ask from the True Guru, about the sermon of the Lord.
satgur paas har baat poochhah jin naam padaarath paa-i-aa.
I ask about the sermon of the Lord from the True Guru, who has obtained the treasure of the Naam.
paa-ay lagah nit karah binantee gur satgur panth bataa-i-aa.
I bow at His Feet constantly, and pray to Him; the Guru, the True Guru, has shown me the Way.
so-ee bhagat dukh sukh samat kar jaanai har har naam har raataa.
He alone is a devotee, who looks alike upon pleasure and pain; he is imbued with the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
har kirpaa har kirpaa kar gur satgur mayl sukh-daata. ||1||
O Lord, show Your Mercy, show Your Mercy, and let me meet the True Guru, the Giver of peace. ||1||

In plain words

Be kind to me, and let me meet real wisdom, the giver of peace.

I go and ask it about what's good and true.

A real friend of the One treats joy and hardship the same — steady through both.

A truly steady heart stays even through both good days and hard ones — not thrown around by either.
The deeper layer

Guru Ram Das: "show Your Mercy, let me meet the True Guru, the Giver of peace... I go and ask about the sermon." The verse's gem is its definition of a true devotee: "he alone is a devotee who looks alike upon pleasure and pain" — steadiness through both good days and hard ones (sam drisat, equal vision). For a child: a truly steady heart stays even through both good days and hard ones.

A Question to Sit With

How might you stay steady inside whether a day goes well or badly?
