Verse 3 of 4

Give Your Heart to the Good and the Thirst Is Lifted

mai parabh sach pachhaani-aa hor bhoolee avgani-aaray.
I have realized my True Lord God, while the other worthless ones have gone astray.
mai sadaa raavay pir aapnaa sachrhai sabad veechaaray.
I dwell constantly upon my Beloved Husband Lord, and reflect upon the True Word of the Shabad.
sachai sabad veechaaray rang raatee naaray mil satgur pareetam paa-i-aa.
The bride reflects upon the True Shabad, and is imbued with His Love; she meets with the True Guru, and finds her Beloved.
antar rang raatee sehjay maatee ga-i-aa dusman dookh sabaa-i-aa.
Deep within, she is imbued with His Love, and intoxicated with delight; her enemies and sufferings are all taken away.
apnay gur kaN-u tan man deejai taaN man bheejai tarisnaa dookh nivaaray.
Surrender body and soul to your Guru, and then you shall become happy; your thirst and pain shall be taken away.
mai pir sach pachhaani-aa hor bhoolee avgani-aaray. ||3||
I have realized my True Lord God, while the other worthless ones have gone astray. ||3||

In plain words

I've found my footing in the good, though I once wandered off after lesser things.

Keeping the good close and turning true words over in my heart, I'm soaked in its love.

Give your whole heart to what's wise, and you'll grow happy, your thirst and pain lifted.

Give your whole heart to what's wise and good — and happiness follows, and the aching thirst inside is lifted.
The deeper layer

"I have realized my True Lord God, while the other worthless ones have gone astray" is rendered gently — "I've found my footing, though I once wandered." The invitation is warm: "surrender body and soul to your Guru, and then you shall become happy; your thirst and pain shall be taken away." Giving your whole heart to what's wise is the way to real gladness. For a child: give your whole heart to what's wise and good, and happiness follows, and the aching thirst inside is lifted.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to give your whole heart to something truly good?
