Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 14 — gold and iron look the same

ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਨਾਹਿ ਜਿਹਿ ਕੰਚਨ ਲੋਹ ਸਮਾਨਿ ॥
ustat nindi-aa naahi jihi kanchan loh samaan.
One who is beyond praise and slander, who looks upon gold and iron alike
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨਿ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਤੈ ਜਾਨਿ ॥੧੪॥
kaho naanak sun ray manaa mukat taahi tai jaan. ||14||
- says Nanak, listen, mind: know that such a person is liberated. ||14||

In plain words

Someone untouched by praise and slander, to whom gold and iron are the same —

Nanak says: listen, O mind, know that such a person is free.

You are free when your peace does not depend on praise or on treasure.
The deeper layer

A free person treats praise and blame, gold and iron, the same.

ustat nindi-aa naahi jihi — praise and blame do not move them. kanchan loh samaan — gold and iron are equal to them. Think of a kid who plays just as happily with a cardboard box as with an expensive toy. The joy is in them, not in the thing.

mukat taahi tai jaan — know that such a person is mukat, free. Here freedom means not depending on what others say, or on how much you own. Their peace comes from inside, where no one can add to it or take it away.

A Question to Sit With

How much does what other people say about you decide how you feel? Could that shift a little?
