Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 15 — friend and enemy, held the same

ਹਰਖੁ ਸੋਗੁ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਨਹੀ ਬੈਰੀ ਮੀਤ ਸਮਾਨਿ ॥
harakh sog jaa kai nahee bairee meet samaan.
One who is not affected by pleasure or pain, who looks upon friend and enemy alike
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨਿ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਤੈ ਜਾਨਿ ॥੧੫॥
kaho naanak sun ray manaa mukat taahi tai jaan. ||15||
- says Nanak, listen, mind: know that such a person is liberated. ||15||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Someone untouched by joy and sorrow, to whom enemy and friend are the same —

Nanak says: listen, O mind, know that such a person is free.

Freedom is a heart that holds friend and enemy the same.
The deeper layer

A free person holds joy and sorrow, friend and enemy, with the same steady heart.

harakh sog jaa kai nahee — joy and sorrow do not carry them away. bairee meet samaan — enemy and friend look alike to them. This does not mean they feel nothing. It means their love stays on, like a porch light that shines for every visitor.

mukat taahi tai jaan — know that such a person is free. Love that leaves no one out points toward a life that harms no one.

A Question to Sit With

Is your kindness the same toward people you like and people you do not? What would even-hearted look like?
