One who does not frighten anyone, and who is not afraid of anyone else

kaho naanak sun ray manaa gi-aanee taahi bakhaan. ||16||
- says Nanak, listen, mind: call him spiritually wise. ||16||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Someone who frightens no one and is afraid of no one —

Nanak says: listen, O mind, call that person wise.

The wisest thing you can be: someone who frightens no one and fears no one.
The deeper layer

Frightening no one and fearing no one is what makes a person wise.

Bhai kaahoo ka-o dayt neh: gives fear to no one. Neh bhai maanat aan: takes fear from no one else. Gi-aanee taahi bakhaan: call that person gi-aanee, wise. Here wisdom is a way of living, free of fear on both sides. These words are among the most loved in all of Gurbani.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a place in your life where you could stop scaring someone, or stop being scared? What would that take?
