Sikhism·Salok Mahalla 9·The Closing Saloks
Verse 2 of 57

Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 2 — not stepping back for even a moment

ਬਿਖਿਅਨ ਸਿਉ ਕਾਹੇ ਰਚਿਓ ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਹੋਹਿ ਉਦਾਸੁ ॥
bikhi-an si-o kaahay rachi-o nimakh na hohi udaas.
Why are you engrossed in sin and corruption? You are not detached, even for a moment!
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਜੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਾ ਪਰੈ ਨ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਫਾਸ ॥੨॥
kaho naanak bhaj har manaa parai na jam kee faas. ||2||
Says Nanak, meditate, vibrate upon the Lord, and you shall not be caught in the noose of death. ||2||

In plain words

Why are you so wrapped up in things that poison the heart? You do not step back from them, even for a moment.

Nanak says: remember the One, O mind, and death's noose will not catch you.

Step back from what poisons the heart, and remember the One.
The deeper layer

Remembering the One keeps a person free while the world's pulls try to hold on.

Bikhi-an si-o kaahay rachi-o: why are you wrapped up in poison? Nimakh na hohi udaas: you do not step back, even for a moment. Parai na jam kee faas: the noose of death will not fall on you. Death's noose is a hard picture, and the answer to it is the One, kept close in the mind.

A Question to Sit With

What pulls your attention most? Can you enjoy it without letting it own you?
