Verse 3 of 57

Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 3 — youth passes, life slips away

ਤਰਨਾਪੋ ਇਉ ਹੀ ਗਇਓ ਲੀਓ ਜਰਾ ਤਨੁ ਜੀਤਿ ॥
tarnaapo i-o hee ga-i-o lee-o jaraa tan jeet.
Your youth has passed away like this, and old age has overtaken your body.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਜੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਾ ਅਉਧ ਜਾਤੁ ਹੈ ਬੀਤਿ ॥੩॥
kaho naanak bhaj har manaa a-oDh jaat hai beet. ||3||
Says Nanak, meditate, vibrate upon the Lord; your life is fleeting away! ||3||

In plain words

Your youth has gone by just like that, and old age has taken over your body.

Nanak says: remember the One, O mind; your life is slipping away.

Life keeps slipping by, so remember the One now.
The deeper layer

Youth passes and life slips away, so the time to remember the One is now.

Tarnaapo i-o hee ga-i-o: youth went by just like that. Lee-o jaraa tan jeet: old age has won over the body. A-oDh jaat hai beet: the span of life is passing. Time keeps moving, so remembering the One cannot wait.

A Question to Sit With

Is there someone you love who you could tell, or show, today instead of someday?
