Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 4 — a wake-up call

ਬਿਰਧਿ ਭਇਓ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਲੁ ਪਹੂਚਿਓ ਆਨਿ ॥
biraDh bha-i-o soojhai nahee kaal pahoochi-o aan.
You have become old, and you do not understand that death is overtaking you.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਰ ਬਾਵਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਨ ਭਜੈ ਭਗਵਾਨੁ ॥੪॥
kaho naanak nar baavray ki-o na bhajai bhagvaan. ||4||
Says Nanak, you are insane! Why do you not remember and meditate on God? ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You have grown old, and you do not see that death has come close.

Nanak says: O foolish one, why do you not remember the One?

Wake up and remember the One while there is time.
The deeper layer

Death comes close, so remembering the One cannot wait.

BiraDh bha-i-o: grown old. Soojhai nahee: you do not understand. Kaal pahoochi-o aan: death has arrived. Nar baavray: O foolish one, a word that shakes a friend awake. Ki-o na bhajai bhagvaan: why do you not remember the One?

A Question to Sit With

What is something wonderful in your ordinary day that you usually walk right past?
