Sikhism·Salok Mahalla 9·The Closing Saloks
Verse 5 of 57

Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 5 — what you cannot pack

ਧਨੁ ਦਾਰਾ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਸਗਲ ਜਿਨਿ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨਿ ॥
Dhan daaraa sampat sagal jin apunee kar maan.
Your wealth, spouse, and all the possessions which you claim as your own
ਇਨ ਮੈ ਕਛੁ ਸੰਗੀ ਨਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੀ ਜਾਨਿ ॥੫॥
in mai kachh sangee nahee naanak saachee jaan. ||5||
- none of these shall go along with you in the end. O Nanak, know this as true. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Wealth, husband or wife, and all the things you call your own —

Nanak says: none of these will go along with you in the end. Know this as true.

Nothing you call your own goes along with you; know this as true.
The deeper layer

Nothing we call our own goes along with us in the end.

Dhan daaraa sampat sagal: wealth, wife, and all possessions. Jin apunee kar maan: which you think of as yours. In mai kachh sangee nahee: none of them is a companion for the last journey. Naanak saachee jaan: know this as true. Loving people is good; the salok asks for clear sight about what lasts.

A Question to Sit With

If you could only carry one thing forever, and it could not be an object, what would you want it to be?
