Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 6 — the One who is always with you

ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਨ ਭੈ ਹਰਨ ਹਰਿ ਅਨਾਥ ਕੇ ਨਾਥ ॥
patit uDhaaran bhai haran har anaath kay naath.
He is the Saving Grace of sinners, the Destroyer of fear, the Master of the masterless.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਹ ਜਾਨੀਐ ਸਦਾ ਬਸਤੁ ਤੁਮ ਸਾਥਿ ॥੬॥
kaho naanak tih jaanee-ai sadaa basat tum saath. ||6||
Says Nanak, realize and know Him, who is always with you. ||6||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One lifts up the fallen, takes away fear, and is the Master of those who have no master.

Nanak says: know that One, who lives with you always.

The One who takes away fear lives with you always.
The deeper layer

The One who lifts the fallen and takes away fear is always with you.

Three old names for the One come together here: patit udhaaran, the lifter of the fallen; bhai haran, the remover of fear; anaath kay naath, the Master of those who have no master. Sadaa basat tum saath: that One lives with you always, near and never far.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel afraid or alone, what helps you remember the One is with you?
