Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 20 — the Naam that melts fear

ਭੈ ਨਾਸਨ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਨ ਕਲਿ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
bhai naasan durmat haran kal mai har ko naam.
In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the Name of the Lord is the Destroyer of fear, the Eradicator of evil-mindedness.
ਨਿਸਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਜੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਜੈ ਸਫਲ ਹੋਹਿ ਤਿਹ ਕਾਮ ॥੨੦॥
nis din jo naanak bhajai safal hohi tih kaam. ||20||
Night and day, O Nanak, whoever vibrates and meditates on the Lord's Name, sees all of his works brought to fruition. ||20||

In plain words

In this dark age, the Naam of the One is what destroys fear and takes away wrong thinking.

Nanak says: whoever remembers the One night and day sees all their work bear fruit.

The Naam is something steady to hold in a hard time; it melts fear.
The deeper layer

In a hard and confusing time, the Naam takes fear away and clears wrong thinking.

Kal mai har ko naam: in Kali Yuga, the dark age, the Naam of the One. Old Indian teaching names four ages, and Kali Yuga is the hardest, when people easily lose their way. In that age the Naam is bhai naasan, the destroyer of fear, and durmat haran, the one that takes away wrong thinking.

Nis din jo naanak bhajai: whoever remembers night and day. Safal hohi tih kaam: their work bears fruit, like a tree that gives good fruit after steady care.

A Question to Sit With

What is a steady thing you can turn to when your thoughts get tangled and loud?
