Verse 21 of 57

Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 21 — sing with your voice, listen with your ears

ਜਿਹਬਾ ਗੁਨ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਭਜਹੁ ਕਰਨ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
jihbaa gun gobind bhajahu karan sunhu har naam.
Vibrate with your tongue the Glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe; with your ears, hear the Lord's Name.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨਿ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਪਰਹਿ ਨ ਜਮ ਕੈ ਧਾਮ ॥੨੧॥
kaho naanak sun ray manaa pareh na jam kai Dhaam. ||21||
Says Nanak, listen, man: you shall not have to go to the house of Death. ||21||

In plain words

With your tongue, sing the praises of the Lord of the World. With your ears, listen to the Naam of the One.

Nanak says: listen, O my mind, then you will not have to go to the house of death.

Use your voice and ears for joy: sing and listen, and worry loses its foothold.
The deeper layer

Use your voice to sing of the One, and your ears to hear the Naam.

jihbaa gun gobind bhajahu — with your tongue, sing the praises of Gobind, the Keeper of the world. karan sunhu har naam — with your ears, listen to the Naam. This is kirtan, singing the Guru's songs, and naam simran, remembering the Naam.

Think of a favorite song you sing along to in the car. Your voice and ears join in, and your mood lifts.

The last line says you will not go to jam kai Dhaam, the house of death. That house stands for fear and dread. A heart full of the Naam has no room for them. Worry loosens, and dread has nowhere to stay.

A Question to Sit With

What is a song or set of words that makes you feel calm and full when you say them?
