Sikhism·Salok Mahalla 9·The Closing Saloks
Verse 23 of 57

Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 23 — the world is like a dream and a show

ਜਿਉ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਅਰੁ ਪੇਖਨਾ ਐਸੇ ਜਗ ਕਉ ਜਾਨਿ ॥
ji-o supnaa ar paykhnaa aisay jag ka-o jaan.
Like a dream and a show, so is this world, you must know.
ਇਨ ਮੈ ਕਛੁ ਸਾਚੋ ਨਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥੨੩॥
in mai kachh saacho nahee naanak bin bhagvaan. ||23||
None of this is true, O Nanak, without God. ||23||

In plain words

Know that this world is like a dream, like a show that plays and ends.

Nanak says: without the One, none of it is true.

The world is a passing show; hold it lightly and hold onto the One.
The deeper layer

The world is like a dream or a show. Only the One lasts.

ji-o supnaa ar paykhnaa — like a supnaa, a dream, and a paykhnaa, a show. aisay jag ka-o jaan — know the world is like that. Think of a movie that makes you laugh and cry. It feels real while it plays. Then the lights come up.

in mai kachh saacho nahee — none of it is saacho, true and lasting, without the One. Seeing this helps us hold things lightly and turn to the One, who does not fade when the show ends.

A Question to Sit With

What in your life feels totally solid but might be more like a passing show?
