Sikhism·Salok Mahalla 9·The Closing Saloks
Verse 24 of 57

Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 24 — the rare heart that remembers

ਨਿਸਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾਰਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਡੋਲਤ ਨੀਤ ॥
nis din maa-i-aa kaarnay paraanee dolat neet.
Night and day, for the sake of Maya, the mortal wanders constantly.
ਕੋਟਨ ਮੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੋਊ ਨਾਰਾਇਨੁ ਜਿਹ ਚੀਤਿ ॥੨੪॥
kotan mai naanak ko-oo naaraa-in jih cheet. ||24||
Among millions, O Nanak, there is scarcely anyone, who keeps the Lord in his consciousness. ||24||

In plain words

Night and day, for the sake of Maya, money and things, people rush about, never steady.

Nanak says: among millions, hardly anyone keeps the Lord in mind.

You can be a rare, calm heart that carries a little stillness through a busy world.
The deeper layer

Among many busy people, the one who remembers the One is rare.

nis din maa-i-aa kaarnay — night and day, for the sake of Maya, money and things, people rush about. kotan mai naanak ko-oo — among millions, Nanak says, only a few keep naaraa-in, the One, in mind.

Think of a busy train station. Everyone hurries past. One person sits calmly, reading. That calm person stands out.

Being one of the few who remember is open to anyone. A person can carry a little stillness through an ordinary busy day.

A Question to Sit With

In the middle of a busy day, could you find ten quiet seconds to just remember and breathe?
