Sikhism·Salok Mahalla 9·The Closing Saloks
Verse 25 of 57

Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 25 — like bubbles on the water

ਜੈਸੇ ਜਲ ਤੇ ਬੁਦਬੁਦਾ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਨੀਤ ॥
jaisay jal tay budbudaa upjai binsai neet.
As the bubbles in the water well up and disappear again,
ਜਗ ਰਚਨਾ ਤੈਸੇ ਰਚੀ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨਿ ਮੀਤ ॥੨੫॥
jag rachnaa taisay rachee kaho naanak sun meet. ||25||
so is the universe created; says Nanak, listen, O my friend! ||25||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

As bubbles rise up on the water and keep disappearing,

so the world is made. Nanak says: listen, O my friend!

The world is like a bubble on the water: bright for a moment, then gone.
The deeper layer

Like bubbles on water, everything in the world rises up and passes.

Jaisay jal tay budbudaa upjai binsai neet: as bubbles form in water and vanish again and again. Jag rachnaa taisay rachee: the world is made the same way. Guru Tegh Bahadur often uses pictures like this, of things that shine for a moment and are gone.

Kaho naanak sun meet: listen, my friend. The tone is close and warm, one friend telling another something worth knowing.

A Question to Sit With

What is one small, ordinary moment today that is worth catching and loving while it is here?
