Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 31 — too dazzled to remember

ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਈ ਮਦਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਅੰਧੁ ॥
paraanee raam na chayt-ee mad maa-i-aa kai anDh.
The mortal does not think of the Lord; he is blinded by the wine of Maya.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਭਜਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਰਤ ਤਾਹਿ ਜਮ ਫੰਧ ॥੩੧॥
kaho naanak har bhajan bin parat taahi jam fanDh. ||31||
Says Nanak, without meditating on the Lord, he is caught in the noose of Death. ||31||

In plain words

A person does not think of the One, blinded by the wine of Maya, the glitter of money and things.

Nanak says: without remembering the One, that person is caught in the noose of death.

Forgetting the One is the trap; remembering is the way out.
The deeper layer

Glitter can make a person forget the One, and forgetting leads into a trap.

This salok repeats an earlier one almost word for word. mad maa-i-aa kai anDh — blinded by the wine of Maya, the glitter of money and things. The person does not remember raam, the One. Without singing the One's praise, they are caught in jam fanDh, the noose of death.

Saying it twice is a way of teaching, like a teacher repeating the most important point. Here the stress falls on turning back. Think of wobbling on a bike. A quick grip of the handlebars, and you are steady again. Remembering the One steadies us just like that.

A Question to Sit With

What is a small habit that helps you steady yourself when your head is spinning?
