Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 30 — a life tangled in Maya

ਮਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੈ ਫਧਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਬਿਸਰਿਓ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
man maa-i-aa mai faDh rahi-o bisri-o gobind naam.
The mortal is entangled in Maya; he has forgotten the Name of the Lord of the Universe.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਜਨ ਜੀਵਨ ਕਉਨੇ ਕਾਮ ॥੩੦॥
kaho naanak bin har bhajan jeevan ka-unay kaam. ||30||
Says Nanak, without meditating on the Lord, what is the use of this human life? ||30||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The mind is caught in Maya, the pull of money and things, and has forgotten the Naam of the Lord of the World.

Nanak says: without remembering the One, what use is this life?

A busy life without remembering the One misses its whole point.
The deeper layer

A mind caught up in Maya forgets the Naam, and without the Naam a life misses its purpose.

Man maa-i-aa mai faDh rahi-o: the mind is trapped in Maya. Bisri-o gobind naam: it has forgotten the Naam of Gobind, the Lord of the World. Like a fish caught in a net, it is so busy struggling that it forgets the open water.

Jeevan ka-unay kaam: what use is such a life? The question is sharp on purpose. It asks the mind to wake up and remember.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you get so busy with that you forget the bigger why behind it?
