Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 39 — whatever pleases the One comes to pass

ਜਤਨ ਬਹੁਤ ਸੁਖ ਕੇ ਕੀਏ ਦੁਖ ਕੋ ਕੀਓ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
jatan bahut sukh kay kee-ay dukh ko kee-o na ko-ay.
People make all sorts of efforts to find peace and pleasure, but no one tries to earn pain.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨਿ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਹੋਇ ॥੩੯॥
kaho naanak sun ray manaa har bhaavai so ho-ay. ||39||
Says Nanak, listen, mind: whatever pleases God comes to pass. ||39||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

People make many efforts to find comfort; no one makes an effort to find pain.

Nanak says: listen, O my mind, whatever pleases the One is what comes to pass.

Do your best, then stop fighting the current and let the river be a river.
The deeper layer

We try hard to be happy, but some things are not ours to control.

jatan bahut sukh kay kee-ay — people make many efforts for comfort and joy. dukh ko kee-o na ko-ay — no one works to get pain. Yet hard days still come. har bhaavai so ho-ay — whatever pleases the One comes to pass. This is Hukam, the order and flow of life.

Think of planning a picnic, and then it rains. You cannot stop the rain. Fighting it only spoils the day. Accepting it lets you find a new plan.

A Question to Sit With

What is something outside your control that you have been fighting? Could you let the river be a river?
