Sikhism·Salok Mahalla 9·The Closing Saloks
Verse 40 of 57

Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 40 — the whole world is asking; the One is giving

ਜਗਤੁ ਭਿਖਾਰੀ ਫਿਰਤੁ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਕੋ ਦਾਤਾ ਰਾਮੁ ॥
jagat bhikhaaree firat hai sabh ko daataa raam.
The world wanders around begging, but the Lord is the Giver of all.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨ ਸਿਮਰੁ ਤਿਹ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਕਾਮ ॥੪੦॥
kaho naanak man simar tih pooran hoveh kaam. ||40||
Says Nanak, meditate in remembrance on Him, and all your works will be successful. ||40||

In plain words

The whole world wanders around begging, and the One is the Giver of all.

Nanak says: O my mind, remember the One, and all your work will be fulfilled.

The whole world is quietly asking; turn to the One who is quietly giving.
The deeper layer

Everyone is asking for something, and the One is the Giver to all.

Jagat bhikhaaree firat hai: the world goes about like a beggar. Sabh ko daataa raam: the One is the daataa, the Giver, of everyone.

Man simar tih: O mind, remember that Giver. Pooran hoveh kaam: your work will be complete. Like going straight to the spring instead of asking at every house for a cup of water.

A Question to Sit With

What is your heart quietly asking for? Where might you already be given more than you notice?
