Sikhism·Salok Mahalla 9·The Closing Saloks
Verse 41 of 57

Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 41 — hold it lightly, it is a dream

ਝੂਠੈ ਮਾਨੁ ਕਹਾ ਕਰੈ ਜਗੁ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਜਿਉ ਜਾਨੁ ॥
jhoothai maan kahaa karai jag supnay ji-o jaan.
Why do you take such false pride in yourself? You must know that the world is just a dream.
ਇਨ ਮੈ ਕਛੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਨਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹਿਓ ਬਖਾਨਿ ॥੪੧॥
in mai kachh tayro nahee naanak kahi-o bakhaan. ||41||
None of this is yours; Nanak proclaims this truth. ||41||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Why be so proud of what is false? Know that the world is like a dream.

None of this is yours. Nanak says this plainly.

If the world is a passing dream, you can hold it lightly and share it freely.
The deeper layer

Pride in a dream makes no sense; none of it is yours to keep.

Jhoothai maan kahaa karai: why take pride in what is false? Jag supnay ji-o jaan: know the world as a dream. Jhooth here means what does not last.

In mai kachh tayro nahee: none of this is yours. Naanak kahi-o bakhaan: Nanak says it out loud. Holding things as borrowed makes room for humility and sharing.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you feel proud to own? How would it feel to hold it a little more lightly?
