Verse 44 of 57

Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 44 — a life with no love for the One

ਏਕ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਜਿਹ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਕੈ ਨਾਹਿ ਮਨਿ ॥
ayk bhagat bhagvaan jih paraanee kai naahi man.
That person, who does not feel devotion to God in his mind
ਜੈਸੇ ਸੂਕਰ ਸੁਆਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਾਨੋ ਤਾਹਿ ਤਨੁ ॥੪੪॥
jaisay sookar su-aan naanak maano taahi tan. ||44||
- O Nanak, know that his body is like that of a pig, or a dog. ||44||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The person whose mind holds no love for the One —

Nanak says: know that their body is no better than a pig's or a dog's.

A human life is meant to hold love for the One.
The deeper layer

A human life without love for the One is missing what makes it human.

Ayk bhagat bhagvaan: love and devotion for the one Lord. Jih paraanee kai naahi man: the person whose mind does not hold it.

Jaisay sookar su-aan: like a pig or a dog. In old India these animals stood for a life spent only on eating and wanting. The picture is hard on purpose. It is about how a life is spent, never about a person's worth.

A Question to Sit With

What is one small way you could add a little more love to an ordinary day?
