Sikhism·Salok Mahalla 9·The Closing Saloks
Verse 48 of 57

Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 48 — only devotion to the One stays

ਨਿਜ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖਿਓ ਜਗਤੁ ਮੈ ਕੋ ਕਾਹੂ ਕੋ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
nij kar daykhi-o jagat mai ko kaahoo ko naahi.
I had looked upon the world as my own, but no one belongs to anyone else.
ਨਾਨਕ ਥਿਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੈ ਤਿਹ ਰਾਖੋ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥੪੮॥
naanak thir har bhagat hai tih raakho man maahi. ||48||
O Nanak, only devotional worship of the Lord is permanent; enshrine this in your mind. ||48||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I looked at the world as my own, yet no one belongs to anyone.

Nanak says: only loving devotion to the One lasts. Keep it in your mind.

People are lent to us, not owned; only love for the One stays.
The deeper layer

Nothing in the world is ours to keep; love for the One lasts.

Nij kar daykhi-o jagat mai: I saw the world as my own. Ko kaahoo ko naahi: no one belongs to anyone.

Naanak thir har bhagat hai: only har bhagat, devotion to the One, is thir, lasting. Tih raakho man maahi: keep that in your mind. Like a backpack you can never lose, it goes wherever you go.

A Question to Sit With

How might loving someone freely, without needing to own them, feel different from clutching them?
